Something Supernatural

Nuclear Blast Records have had a hell of a year with new releases, so looking to continue with that trend are the slightly eclectic Crobot. Taking their sound from everything from Zeppelin and Wolfmother to Queens Of The Stone Age and Kyuss, with Something Supernatural the band have a created a real treat of a Heavy Rock album. They actually come from a similar vein as label mates The Vintage Caravan, with Rock tracks all feeling like a bit of a throwback which admittedley does open the door for a bit of a negative view. Whilst writing a great rock record is all well and good, if it isn't offering anything new in any way there will naturally be an element of cynicism.

To be fair to Crobot though they do it very well. There is a huge level of swagger and they deliver this perfect element of sleaziness across the record. It sounds like one of Slash's solo records with Myles Kennedy but with fewer solos. But there we have it again, it sounds just like something else. As far as future records are concerned they'll certainly need to start shaking things up a bit to avoid falling into the same trap Wolfmother did. Notable tracks on the album include Legend Of The Spaceborne Killer which proves to be an absolutely thunderous opening track, and the lead single from the album Skull Of Geronimo will certainly have crowds singing along at live shows. It has been widely reported that it is indeed live where Crobot really impress, so it will be interesting to see what they're able to unleash in support of this record.

Overall then, this is a good album; there is no getting away from that fact. We've got huge riffs, bouncy melodies and a vocal range only very few can achieve but where it lacks is more a case of it is all a bit samey. The song style across the album alone barely varies, so when such clear comparisons can be drawn with band's they're obviously influenced by it begins to become hard to question why you wouldn't just listen to them instead. They're clearly a very talented bunch, so we're hoping that with the next record they can use Something Supernatural as a stepping stone towards something more fresh and exciting.
