Biography
Siobhan Fahey left Bananarama in 1987 after deciding the image of the band was not really her style after she had got married and had a child. She started working on some new material and was introduced to an ex-girlfriend of her producer Marcy Levy. Marcy had previously worked with Eric Clapton and Chuka Khan. The two decided to make a single together taking the name 'Shakespear's Sister' from the title of an essay written by Virginia Wolfe. Thier first single 'Break My Heart' was released in 1988. They followed it by 'You're History' then released their album at the end of that year. They returned in 1991 with a new album and a UK tour. Radio 1 was refusing to play their new single 'Goodbye Cruel World' and there was no appearance on Top Of The Pops either. Germany also decided to ban the video because they saw it as depicting 'the raising of the dead'.
But then things exploded with the release of 'Stay' in 1992. It hit the top 20 then the next week it went to the top 5 then hit number 1 and stayed there for eight weeks.
