Biography

Turisas are a Finnish folk metal band named after an ancient Finnish god of war. The group was founded in 1997 by Mathias Nygård and Jussi Wickström, but have had many changes to the line up since. Most recent members include Mathias and Jussi along with Tude Lehtonen, Hannes Horma, Olli Vänskä, Janne Mäkinen and Antti Laurila.

Turisas combine power metal, mild elements of black metal and Finnish folk music. There may be many folk-influenced bands hailing from Finland nowadays, but Turisas turn out to be the most diverse wild bunch, courageously incorporating quite unusual influences as well as historic elements into their sound and image.

The band has released four albums back home in Finland and their fifth is due for release later this year. The first, Taiston Tie - The Battle Path, was a demo and released in 1998. Due to its poor sound quality, it is kept locked away and unreleased. As the band matured, as did there sound, and with this came an Unamed Promo in 1999, to get the name out there and familiar. Album three in 2001, The Heart of Turisas was intended to grab the attention of record labels and the media – which it did. In 2003 Century Media Records finally signed the band to a worldwide deal and the pre-production for their big release began - Battle Metal was born and with its 2004 release came attention from all around the world. It is the forthcoming release The Varangian Way later in the year that will give the band the worldwide credit that they deserve. A row of new live shows has been announced including supporting the Finnish rock band Lordi on their Bringing Back The Balls To UK tour.
