With the hordes of sound-alike, look-alike, act-alike bands emerging from the clubs and recording studios of Southern California over the past decade-plus, you would think that any remote deviation from the accepted norm in the scene would be scowled and frowned upon by audiences comfortable with the lack of innovation and meager compositions.
But, for Orange County-based Bullets and Octane, such reaction is the exact opposite. Fronted by lead vocalist Gene Louis- and further propelled by guitarist James Daniel, bassist Brent Clawson, and drummer Ty Smith.- this no-bullshit, pure-attitude punk-bred rock n roll band has received nothing but praise, adulation and in turn, have developed a rabid fan base that has continually packed clubs throughout the region.
The genesis of Bullets and Octane was launched in 2000 by two St. Louis, Missouri transplants, Gene and Brent. Genes father, a St. Louis jazz musician, taught his son how to play drums as a child. Growing up in the downtown, smoky bars playing drums for his fathers band, learning from the cities best musicians, he quickly adapted to all other instruments surrounding him. Gene soon found himself the teacher to many aspiring St. Louis musicians who are now in nationally successful acts. Growing up with the best, Gene sought to only play with superlative musicians. Brent soon became his rhythm section counterpart fulfilling the role of bass player and producer. Self-taught in the studio, Brents production skills extend beyond Bullets and Octane as he has become a favorite for Southern California bands to record with. Once in Orange County, Gene moved to vocals and found his replacement in Ty, an old friend from St. Louis and one of the most sought after drummers in Southern California having played with both The Vandals and Guttermouth and as a ghost drummer on many punk albums. After a few guitar changes, Bullets and Octane found the answer when another long time friend from St. Louis became available. James Daniel had been playing and touring with local St. Louis bands. Tired of a music scene filled with mediocrity, James decided to move on and timing made perfect for his path to cross his old friends. Always amazed with James talent as one of the best emerging guitarists, Gene, Brent, and Ty quickly realized it was exactly his talent that was missing from the band. The four St. Louis friends found themselves together again crafting a unique sound with meticulous songwriting and musicianship.
The band is scheduled to release their debut RCA release, In The Mouth Of The Young , in Spring of 2006. Produced by Page Hamilton of Helmet and mixed by Ken Andrews of Failure, itıs sure to feel nothing less than a punch to the throat!
Having done tours with the likes of Social Distortion Avenged Sevenfold Stateside, Bullets and Octane are set to hit the UK for the first time with Avenged Sevenfold in March.
Bullets and Octanes unapologetic rock n roll is long overdue. And if youre hard pressed to believe that rock n roll vitality, innovation, and originality no longer exists, wed like to suggest attending their next performance to bear witness before your own eyes and ears. Just donıt say we didnt warn you.
