Biography

Gledhill, who formed in 2004, comprise David Gledhill (vocalist & rhythm guitar), Tom Jarvis (lead guitar), Julian Gallagher (bass guitar), Tracey Wilkinson (keyboards & backing vocals) and Lliam Oliver (drums). Discovering that David's ancestors The Gleds were a tribe who "lived in the hills of Yorkshire 500 years ago and would train birds of prey to peck their victims' eyes out", the band decided to settle on, well, the name Gledhill. "They'd rob them afterwards of course," adds David, helpfully.

Gledhill have one small goal: "to write the biggest, most uplifting, epic songs that man has ever heard." And indeed it wasn't long before Simon Williams' highly influential label Fierce Panda gave them their big break after hearing a demo played on Radio 1 by Zane Lowe. Witnessing their live show at Club Fandango shortly afterwards, Williams was itching to put out 'Resurrect Me': "They've never spent so much on a single before," says David. "I asked them if I could do it with this producer (Andy Green), in this studio and with that artwork and they just said 'Yes' to everything."

A further industry supporter came in the shape of Owen Morris (Oasis), who was so impressed with their demo that he drove six hours to see them in Sheffield. In addition to 'Remain', Owen is currently producing their debut album at the Chapel, a residential studio in deepest Lincolnshire. David says simply: "I just thought, 'Oh my god. I'm in the studio with the guy who made 'What's the Story (Morning Glory)'. That was weird."

From their inaugural London show at Barfly, in which an apocalyptic downpour meant that half of the capital's key A&R's were gridlocked in West London, to their support for Keane at this year's Fierce Panda birthday party, it's been a busy twelve months for the band. Despite all this, they've kept their feet firmly on the ground with their monthly residency at The Grapes in Sheffield, as well as doing the toilet circuit around the country – and signing to small UK indie MX3 Records.
