Biography

MSTRKRFT (pronounced 'Master Craft') is the project of Death From Above 1979's Jesse F Keeler and studio wizard AL-P. Where Death From Above 1979's sound is hard rock you can dance to, MSTRKRFT is dance you can rock hard to. JFK and AL-P are here to up the ante in 2006 as rock's merger with electro continues to incite, excite and rumble its way into dance charts the world over.

Both residents of Toronto's East York, JFK and AL-P have been collaborating, on and off, since 1998 when AL recorded Jesse's punk rock band Black Cat #13. AL moved to New York where he worked at studios like Sound On Sound and Chung King recording artists such as Jay-Z and Wyclef Jean. Jesse took a break from music before forming the solo punk rock explosion Femme Fatale in 2001. The same year Al returned to Toronto to start his own studio Kimagure Sound, Femme Fatale was one of his first production duties. This studio success naturally led to Al's being at the helm early in 2002 when Jesse formed Death from Above 1979 with vocalist/drummer Sebastien Grainger, producing the band's debut album 'You're A Woman, I'm A Machine'. The album's pioneering and brutally uncompromising mix of energised hard rock and roll with the oomph of disco won DFA79 legions of fans. It also gave rise to Jesse and Al's resolve to start a project of their own.

Enter MSTRKRFT, a shit-hot addition to the global community of sonic heroes ignoring the boundaries between punk, house, grime, electro and all kinds of electronic experimentation. "What we're making now, we don't know what the hell it is, but I know it's danceable" says JFK, "It all comes down to feel" states AL "We're interested in making people feel like they want to dance, so it's all about whatever it takes to get people there"

The duo recorded their first remix together back in October 2004 with their re-rub of The Panthers "Thank Me With Your Hands". It was an immediate underground success, played in dance clubs and rock clubs, it even made it onto the prestigious 'The Sound Of Young New York And Toronto' compilation. Just over a year later MSTRKRFT have been enlisted to add their unique remixing skills to releases by artists such as Annie, The Kills, Buck 65, Juliette And The Licks, and most notably with last year's version of Bloc Party's "2 More Years". "We like to make the songs we remix our own" JFK explains "I think we approach it differently because we're not coming from a strictly dance background".

Now with the release of their debut single, the vocodered party anthem "Easy Love", MSTRKRFT prove that they can mix rock and dance music with equal abandon and precision. "Easy Love" will be released on 12" vinyl on Last Gang Records, it comes with another of the band's hot remixes on the flip, their version of label mates Metric's "Monster Hospital". The album "The Looks" is currently being finished in the studio. read less
