Biography
Steve Knightley is the songwriting force behind the phenomenally successful acoustic roots duo Show of Hands (in which he is joined by multi instrumentalist Phil Beer) as well as a fine solo singer and musician.
From a rock background, Knightley is known for his strong narrative songs, many inspired by people and places in his native West Country and cogent, inventive lyrics.
His rock style rant Country Life and anthemic rally call Roots were both nominated for Best Original Song in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards whilst Show of Hands won the category Best Live Act in 2004 – the only time the award had been voted for by the public. At the 2010 Awards Steve won the Best Original Song title for his ever topical Arrogance Ignorance and Greed(AIG)– a swipe at bankers and bonuses, MPs and expenses – while Show of Hands were named Best Duo. SGHow of Hands performed AIG live on BBC-1's Andrew Marr Show in February 2011.
Steve released his first solo album in seven years, Cruel River in 2007 to critical acclaim and in May 09 he released Track of Words-Retraced, which reworked his debut solo album of a decade ago. In early 2011 Steve released his debut live solo album "Live in Somerset", recorded at The David Hall, South Petherton and undertook a UK tour supporting it.
He has also produced albums for other artists including Jez Lowe and young Devon singer songwriter Jenna.
Steve is also known for his collaboration with fellow songwriters Tom Robinson and Martyn Joseph in the band Faith, Folk & Anarchy and his more recent links with fellow Devon folk star Seth Lakeman. Steve contributed three tracks to Seth's album Poor Man's Heaven while the pair co-wrote the Rock You To Sleep bonus track on Track of Words-Retraced.
