Biography

#1 Defender is an Ashford, Kent based band which was formed during
early 2002. Starting out life under the moniker 'Brodie', 5 likeminded souls
set about playing music with as much enthusiasm and musicality as they
could muster. After a few songs were written, gigs began to follow, mostly in
the Kent area (particularly Margate - home of seminal emo-punk band the
Babies 3).
A demo release came in Summer 2002 called the Lana Lang Effect which
was well received. (Here is a review -http://vrcnet.tripod.com/id35.html).
Although some of those early songs are still crowd pleasers, a decision
was made to spend time rewriting a new set. By mid 2003 and with a new
name, the Shattered Dreams EP was released on a college label called Formant.
This was
accompanied by a release show at the Camden Barfly. Many more gigs soon
camewith the likes of: Sunfactor, The Babies 3, The Holiday Plan, Not
Katies, ovember Coming Fire, Jairus, Closet Monster, My Favourite Co-pilot,
Winter. In June, Steel Rules Die, One Time Champion, Nine Days To No-One.

The success of the Formant release and the bands perseverence helped to
secure a third six track EP release 'The Diary Truthful' through
Engineer records who have also released music from Planes mistaken from Stars,
Chamberlain & Crosstide. The CD is currently receiving good reviews in
the UK, Germany and Italy and is being played on Norweigian student radio
station Aggresso! More shows and a UK tour in November are to follow.
The bands influences are diverse, drawing in such bands as Sigur Ros,
Blood Brothers, Far, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Appleseed Cast, Sonic Youth,
Glassjaw, Elliott Smith, New End Original (the name comes from one of
their songs) ... the list goes on. The band has been compared to:Glassjaw,
Saves The Day, Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas Is The Reason, New End Original,
At The Drive-In etc, Far, Sensefield, OLD, etc.
#1 Defender aims to keep making the most passionate, intense music we
possibly can while touring, meeting new people and playing with great
underground bands.
