In Vacaville, Northern California, Papa Roach first got it together for a high school talent competiton back in 1993. At the time the band consisted of Jacoby, Jerry, Dave and Will James. Their name came from a CD Buckner owned, Papa Gato by Pancho Sanchez and the fact that Jacoby's grandfathers last name is Roatch so he was known as 'Papa Roatch' to his family. They drew up a roach logo and just liked the fact it was pretty indestructible and could survive almost everything.
After performing shows all over California the band had a good local following, especially when they joined the Warped Tour. By 1996 the band started looking at getting serious. Will James left the band and they got in Tobin Esperance, who was their roadie at the time. They also hired their manager - Bret Bair and made an EP 'Old Friends From Young Years' it cost them $700 and was recorded in the ESP Studios Pittsburg. It was released in February 1997 and was a hit on the local college stations, being the most requested band for five weeks. There notoreity grew as they supported Suicidal Tendencies in March. Another EP '5 Tracks Deep' was released the following April and sold 1,000 copies in the first month. Dreamworks signed them in 2000 and the recording of 'Infest' began. Jay Baumgardner (Coal Chamber, System Of A Down) produced this label debut. With tracks 'dealing with everyday struggle' such as divorce, alcoholicism, A.D.D. and suicide, it was 'LAst Resort' that pushed them into the charts.
Lovehatetrgedy was released in 2002 and Papa Roach accompanied Eminem on his Anger Management tour. Returning in 2004 with 'Getting Away With Murder' this time produced by Howard Benson (P.O.D., Hoobastank).
