There are very few strong female led bands recognised in the rock scene and even fewer that are fronted by out and proud lesbians. Vinyl Black Stilettos think that's a travesty and are on a mission to lead the change.
On first meeting her, frontwoman Laura D seems quiet and it's hard to imagine her rocking out on stage; but there's a glint in her eye that hints at mischievous energy and as soon as you mention music her whole being lights up with animated passion.
Laura has always been compelled to make music; with punk sensibilities and a burning desire to "make people jump" it was only natural that she'd eventually end up forming an electro/punk band.
Finding the right mix of talent and dedication hasn't been easy. Starting out she left her European home for LA and spent time in a mix of bands, falling into a music scene that was more focused on the lifestyle than the music. Couple that with the fact that LA is much more interested in hip hop and metal than a hybrid electro style, Laura knew it wasn't the place for her. With that in mind, and the knowledge that Europe has always had a passion for techno, she picked up and headed to London, determined to form a tight band, with a difference.
It's taken a while and a lot of effort, but it's paid off. Laura D eventually found bassist Dionysus D and was joined by Jay on keys/synth to form a tight knit, talented bunch who share the "music comes first" ethos and who connect in a way that produces a super tight, energetic experience both live and recorded. Their standards are high and it's meant they're still on the hunt for a drummer, (preferably female!!) to round out the band.
Don't despair though, the lack of a full time drummer isn't holding them back. With high quality session drummers and renowned producer Robert Harder they've recorded their debut EP which will be out this spring and there are plans in place for tours through the year, as well as an album, singles and videos.
Highly ambitious, with the quality and talent to match, Vinyl Black Stilettos are ready to unleash their passion and energy onto London ... And very soon after, the world!
You can get a taste of their music at myspace or facebook and keep an eye out for details of their tour and EP.
