Reading and Leeds organizer Melvin Benn has said that the 2008 event will have three American headliners.

He’s also revealed he isn’t looking for a new sponsor to replace Carling, as he wanted the event to become less corporate.

Speaking to BBC 6Music, he explained he wanted the events to return to their roots.

As far as those “American headliners” are concerned, the rumourmill is suggesting Rage Against The Machine will opt for August over Download.

The band are playing a host of European dates this summer, as are Metallica, who release their new album over the summer. They two are being linked with Reading and Leeds.

Metallica have dates in Germany the weekend prior to Download, but then so did Smashing Pumpkins last year and they turned up in the UK over the August bank holiday weekend.
