J CHURCH started during the Cretacious period of emo and pop punk (1992)from the ashes of Cringer (Vinyl Communications / Lookout!). As a threepiece, the band mostly focused on expanding from the format that had become known as the East Bay sound, utilizing information gathered from bands like the Pixies, the Byrds, the Replacements, the Electric Light Orchestra and Half Japanese. The sound evolved over five albums to include elements of improvisation, country and pop. Over the years, the band has also had many line-ups including past and future members of great bands such as Jawbreaker, Snuff, A Minor Forest, PEE, the Hickoids, Corduroy, Storm The Tower, and Jawbreaker! J CHURCH was forced by various circumstances (the exploding rents and the lure of the UT Grad School program) to relocate to Austin, TX. Since then, the band has reformed as a four-piece, tighter, faster, and louder than ever before! Their latest album "Society Is A Carnivorous Flower" marks the first studio full length release by J Church since 1999's "One Mississippi"(Honest Don's/Fat). It is their sixth! The b-side is a lengthy song made up of shorter ones, as inspired by "A Quick One" by the Who and "Cradle To The Grave" by the Subhumans.
