It was announced last week that there is to be a theme song for the 2012 Olympics.

With a recent poll by the Association of British Orchestras finding 69% of people wanted a piece of classical music or music combining classical and another style for the event, Room Thirteen writers have been discussing whether a traditional track would best represent the UK’s musical heritage.

Casting aside the mainstream suggestions - the wonderful, but over used ‘London Calling’ by The Clash; something by the hugely inventive, stadium filling powerhouse that is Muse or as the event is in the East End, perhaps something by Chas and Dave - here are some original and inventive suggestions from our writers:

Omar Soliman: “Barmy Welsh psychedelia for the Olympic anthem? Hear me out. Not a classical piece, nor cringe-inducing pop; Super Furry Animals' 2001 hit, ‘(Drawing) Rings Around The World’ fits the bill brilliantly.”

Paul Chesworth: “'City Of Crime' (end theme from 80's movie Dragnet) by Glenn Hughes, 'Keep On Running' by Spencer Davis Group (athletics, and people leaving Wembley running the gauntlet to beat the local thugs) or perhaps 'Burn' by Deep Purple (for the opening ceremony).”

Andy Latham: “'British Disease' by Subhumans, 'Great British Mistake' by The Adverts (remembering Zola Budd perhaps?) or 'Greetings from Shitsville' by The Wildhearts? It's bound to be Spandau Ballet though, isn't it?

For glorious victories when the flags are going up, 'In Your Face' by Children of Bodom.”

Jim Ody: “For a tougher edge, you need look no further than Blighty's best Punk band, The Strawberry Blondes for some great anthems. Debut album title track 'Rise Up', and the follow up album title track 'Fight Back' are both great songs, but my pick would be, 'Young Free N Easy', although this may be taken differently than intended!

You could go classic like The Who's 'My Generation', any number of Queen tracks, or, and I really hate to say this, but Robbie Williams 'Let Me Entertain You' (His first album was okay, then he slowly began to believe his own hype...)

Wouldn't it be great to have the team coming out to Black Sabbath 'Iron Man'?!”

A decision regarding the official theme of the 2012 games is expected nearer the games.
