With a voice that flitters through the scale 'foreign country' is a breath of fresh air.
New York based singer/songwriter Christina Courtin has a voice like a humming bird. It dots and darts about the scale effortlessly, spurting out syllables at an incredible pace. Along with the accompanying flow of a southern styled acoustic guitar (Ryan Scott), her nimble voice leads us into ‘foreign country’, the single from her self titled album released 27th June. With a resemblance to other singers such as Jenny Owen Youngs and Beth Rogers and a melody reminiscent of Bright eyes in their country era, the song instantly gives you a warm, happy feeling at the bottom of your heart.
With lyrics such as "If I was a foreign country, would you visit me? If I were France, would you sit in my cafe?" it is clear that Courtin is a mistress of quirky questions and inescapably imaginative lyrics. For those not prepared to walk down that dust track to the land of country guitar and key lime pie, it might be best to give this one a miss. But if you live for a taste of the bountiful south, then this single will have you dancing round your pickup with a jug of moonshine swinging from your tanned and tattooed arms.
