Traditional folk from James Yorkston et al.
It’s surprising that James Yorkston of the Athletes has taken until now to release an album purely dedicated to folk. Having tentatively dipped in and out of the genre for years, it seems he as finally taken the plunge. Teaming up with James Green (of the outfit Big Eyes) he brings us an album of traditional tunes, unambiguously titled ‘Folk Songs’. And here’s the accompanying single.
‘Martinmas Time’, released 3rd August as a limited edition, is a sleepy, quiet offering of acoustic guitar and soothing lyrics consisting of two tracks which offer fans a taste of what to expect from the full album, brought out 10th August.
First track, the aforementioned ‘Martinmas Time’ is a romantic ditty set in the hinterland of rolling hills and dales, complete with violins, whistle and guitar. It seems that the narrator loves a farmer’s daughter, and she’s a frisky young wench, but no one seems to mind. Let’s just say this girl likes men in soldiers uniform, and why have one man when you can have an entire troop? Who knew folk could be so dirty?!
