Hot on the Trail with a stunning debut single

To Trail ‘Prism’ is all about: “the very moment you realise you’re free of something that was dragging you down. From the moment light hits a prism and it’s split into different directions, it’s just like reaching a crossroads in life when you realise all the infinite possibilities open to you”. But as a single, it’s not as deep as all that. Chiming guitar melodies have the lightness and shine of glass, and are a gorgeously kaleidoscopic background for a soaring chorus. ‘Prism’ might suggest comparisons to Muse, but it’s far from their darkly dreaming delusions. Think a radio-friendly version that uplifts the soul and makes you believe that there are some songs that bridge the gap between ‘commercial’ and ‘alternative’.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s hardly going to win any literary prizes. But it does have an instant ringing appeal. It doesn’t head towards the dangerously murky waters of power balladry (thank heavens), but it’s not got the heavy appeal that would lift it from something you listen to out of idle curiosity to a ‘gotta-have-the-album’ song. Think Foo Fighters or Linkin Park in their quieter moments, without the sudden rush of darkness. But as an opening gambit for a new band, Trail are on to a winner.
