All Funked Out

Brooklyn-based product and multi-instrumentalist Alan Wilkis certainly has a sound that most Brits would associate with the US; loud, funked-up and totally colourful, ‘Pink and Purple’ is full of bright, snazzy tunes to cheer up your winter. The music is slick, well-produced and dripping in jazzy handclaps and shimmering samples. ‘Snuggle Up To Nail Down’ sounds like Prince and sizzles with Scissor Sisters’ exaggerated energy. Unfortunately like many of the tracks on this release it suffers from being just a little too long to fulfil anyone’s need for slightly repetitive pop, second track ‘N.I.C.E’ is, well, nice, but not enough to merit its 5 minute length.

‘Pink and Purple’ is fresh and has some cool vibes, as does the groove-laden ‘Dance With You’, which sounds like it stepped straight out the 80s with the intention of “getting freaky”, it probably even wears hotpants and headbands. If you’re into retro grooves and funk, then you can probably find some endearing qualities in these pop tunes. The average bystander is likely to be initially intrigued by the fun aspect of Wilkis’ music, but then become disinterested, depending on their attention span.
