Pharaohs ‘technical indie’ can easily elicit comparisons to Biffy Clyro and Minus The Bear with all those complex, jagged riffs and catchy melodies but they have a definite sound of their own which transcends such lazy name dropping. This seven track EP showcases their sound very effectively; opening track ‘TV’ is a sweet, melodic indie track with off kilter guitars and great vocal harmonies, variety and complexity in the riffs gives away how talented they are but they make it all sound so easy.
Probably the most instantly catchy track is former single ‘Squashed Against My Wall’ with a super bouncy beat and repetitive, great-to-sing-along-to chorus which you find yourself humming long after it’s finished, great stuff. The rest of the EP doesn’t disappoint either; ‘Space Is A Waste Of Space’ and ‘Decorex’ slightly less upbeat but no less memorable, with, again, some cracking riffs. ‘If Columbus Had A Sat Nav, America Wouldn’t Exist’ flirts with an expansive and progressive sound (in a Yourcodename is:Milo way) and has changes of pace and rhythm to mix things up. Final two tracks ‘Mosquito In A Bottle’ and ‘Traffic’ move back into more poppy territory but ‘Traffic’ especially has enough of a jagged edge and a big uplifting chorus so that they are never too straight forward.
A great EP, all seven tracks hold your attention and are individually memorable, recommended.
