A Strong Debut

Midas Fall formed in 2008 and have already released an EP called ‘Century’ and been on a tour of the UK with radio airplay They are now stepping up to their first full CD through Monotreme Records who they signed with just recently with their own kind of atmospheric alt rock.

‘Eleven. Return and revert’ is a great way to debut. With elements of Mogwai, Radiohead and Portishead able to be heard, Midas Fall are able to carve out their own originality unlike some bands who fall into the trap of ripping their influences off. This band put them to good use.

Album opener ‘Movie screens’ show off the impressive voice of singer Elizabeth Heaton with her enchanting vocals and powerful drumming from Adam Ley-Lange.
The guitar work of Rowan Burn show Mogwai were an influence on the band.
It may just be coincidental but this opening song was reminiscent of Sunny Day Real estate.

‘My Radio Star’ is just on of many highlights on the album with crunching guitars driving the song forward. Possibly the most radio friendly song on the album.
Brian Dunsmore steps forward with some lovely piano work on track seven, War pigeon. Elizabeth Heaton’s voice is at her most haunting and heart breaking on this song.

One strong point of this album is how it can make the transition from a sounds cape such as Movie Screens to electronic tinged songs like ‘Fog Sky Nun.’ This also applies to ‘century’ which is track two on the album. They help contrast with the raw guitar sound.

‘17’ is a traditional quiet to loud song with blazing guitars bringing back the Mogwai influence.

The song to bring proceedings to an end is ‘Stalking Moon’ and just like ‘Movie Screen’s was a brilliant way to begin the album, the former is a great song to end it.

Midas Fall are supporting Japanese band Mono when they tour in UK in March.
If you have the chance, get yourself along to see them because this album is a great introduction. Not perfect by any means but there is definitely talent in this band.

‘Eleven. Return and revert’ will be released on the 17th April.
