EP Review

Jets To Zurich are a four-piece rock band from Wales. Their self-titled EP, which is the second to be released by the group, features two songs taken from debut album ‘Atmospheric Sound Cycles’. Both of these tracks have a very ‘90s grungy sound, similar to the likes of Nirvana and Alice In Chains. However, to simply label them as Nirvana copycats would be unfair. The heavy riff and driving rhythm of opener ‘Buzzkiller’, for example, give the song a stoner rock feel that goes well with Dale Hawkins’s singing.

Moving away, once again, from the Seattle sound is ‘Oceans’, an instrumental track that is closer in resemblance to something that Metallica would play, with its calm but sombre dual soloing.

The final song on the EP, ‘All Of Me’, is a chilled guitar track that, with the lack of drums, sounds arguably like one of the more relaxed songs by the aforementioned band beginning with N. But, as with the previous examples, JTZ manage to sufficiently alter the familiar sound by putting some additional life into the music. In this case, the extra intensity comes from an upbeat guitar melody at the chorus, which is vaguely reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Jets To Zurich may not be doing anything groundbreaking, but this EP is a welcome return of some older styles, which are heard less of these days. As previously mentioned, the added flavours prevent their music from appearing too stale. Hopefully, this provides a good taster of the album.
