Dramatic but uplifting

Soft indie-rock is a difficult type of music to make these days. At least, it is if you want to be taken at all seriously as a band. The likes of Keane, Snow Patrol and Coldplay are to be thanked for this, their long list of dull, schmaltzy indie ballads assisting in making the genre less and less interesting. Anything that follows a similar sound is rightfully laughed at with the only festival that bands like this have any hope of playing is V.

Whilst the music of the Brighton-based Mojo Fins could definitely be described as soft indie, it is far from the boring, unoriginal sounds of the bands mentioned above. ‘Meet Me At The Pictures’, the latest single to be taken from debut album ‘The Sounds That I Still Hear’, is a dramatic but uplifting song. Despite being slow-paced, there is a certain energy to the track, which is helped along by singer Stephen Brett’s powerful vocals.

B-side ‘Paper Lanterns’ is a treat in itself. It’s an enjoyable instrumental track with a chilled out drum-and-bass style beat and a clever but calming piano/guitar melody. This helps to further distance The Mojo Fins from the unfortunate “soft indie” label.
