A band to keep an ear out for...

There is nothing more satisfying at the moment than 'Wide Awake and Watching' by Edinburgh based five piece Your First Mistake.

The record may be comprised of a mere four songs, but they are tracks that offer more than enough impressions as to what the band are aiming to achieve with their sound. Opening with the punchy 'Michael, It Was Just An Illusion' gives the first notion of power with a drilling sound that will knock its way into your consciousness. The harmonies instantly stand out with overlapping lyrics becoming rather gripping. The concluding screams were a little startling, but since they are bursting with energy they suit the feeling of the song. As the EP progresses on to 'All That's Left Between Us Is Hope' and 'Be My Purpose', a similar ambiance is discharged, with the harmonies making another welcome return, synchronising remarkably well and really blending together. The record concludes with the screams of 'I Say Flash, You Say Thunder'. The vocals contrast well; gentle projected lyrics and larger screams of words while still holding the harmonic choruses close.

'Wide Awake and Watching' may still be a little rough around the edges, but with these four tracks there is unquestionably something special and enduring about Your First Mistake. This first Ep has been a hit, so lets wait and see what the second holds in store...
