Humanfly-Darker Later

Leeds quartet Humanfly are a creative concoction of genres on their latest studio album 'Darker Later'. The third effort from the British boys, which is released through Brew Records on November 8, sees the band expertly blend harsh and heavy riffs with atmospheric ambiences.

Opening with crudely titled 'This Is Where Your Parents Fucked', the five-minute track initially lures the listener into the record with its serene tone. However, Humanfly hastily swap their soft unexpected sound for a powerful and pungent progressive rock texture. Vocals are few and far between on the tune, but when they are present they are remarkably similar to that of Black Sabbath's Ozzy Osbourne.

'Stew For The Murder Minded' sees the four-piece reinvent their sound and style once again. The spirited song is a cleverly crafted combination of both the punk-rock and post-hardcore genres, with galloping guitars and ballsy screams and shouts making an appearance. Contrasting greatly with the Black Sabbath comparison made earlier on in this review, this tasty track is on a par with that of Gallows and at times MewithoutYou.

Pushing their boundaries one step further, Humanfly fully embrace the metal genre on 'The Enemy Of My Enemy Is Me'. Grunts, growls, inaudible lyrics, brutal breakdowns and demonic drumming are all unleashed on the unpredicted three-minute song.

Similarly startling is title-track 'Darker Later', the stripped bare, acoustic-laden song showcases yet another side to the band and proves that Humanfly are more than capable of creating mellow tunes, as well as boisterous rock anthems.

The dynamic and diligent record comes to a close with hefty 'Heavy Black Snow'. Not only does the track boast a 17-minute duration, but it also features upcoming singer Rose Kemp, who brings both spoken dialogue and beautiful vocals to the song.

'Darker Later' is an extremely diverse record, the six tracks on this release prove that Humanfly are an incredibly eclectic band and are by no means one-trick ponies. This album literally has something for everybody and is definitely worth a listen.
