Quirky jazz/pop
Having been a session musician and pianist for hire, Glasgow's Andy Lucas has certainly put in the hours and with the release of this single from his debut album "Weekend Millionaire" we can see how he stands on his own two feet. From the evidence of the three tracks on offer here you'd have to say he doesn't do too badly but the press release doesn't really make clear which song is the single, but it's nice to get a general taster of the music on offer on the album.
The Tom Waitsesque edge to his voice is very pleasant and you can even hear a bit of Elvis Costello slipping in too. Combining the vocals with an overall dark, self deprecating tone gives these tracks an almost jazzy feel with a slight echo of Ben Folds.
The tracks "Weekend Millionaire" and "Supergeeks" show wry humour in their lyrics and create pictures in your mind that are imaginative and show real competence in Lucas's abilities as a leading man. The backing vocals on "Weekend Millionaire" are particularly strong. "Turbulence" is probably the weakest of the 3 tracks but still demonstrates his lyrical abilities and his strong musicianship.
Social observation and wry humour combined with gritty jazz/pop style vocals definitely make this a promising effort. It's not unique and groundbreaking music but it's solid and enjoyable, with tight instrumentals and an overarching quirkiness that makes it difficult to categorise.
