Alt bounciness

Bars Of Gold's sound is warm yet fuzzy, part alt-rock jaggedness, part poppy bounciness and edged with a punk tone from the vocals, great melodies meld with interesting quirky bits to make catchy, unpredictable tunes with heart.

Bars Of Gold is made up of ex members of Bear Vs Shark and current members of Wildcatting, their sound brings to mind Modest Mouse at times due to strings and a variety of other instruments creating an experimental folk-rock feel which you can hear on tracks like 'The Hustle'. At other times though a more abrasive, punk sound helped by a repeated use of gang vocals in the background, amongst other things, coming through on tracks like 'Doctors & Lawyers', these tunes are more reminiscent of a cross between These Arms Are Snakes and Fugazi, in the vocal delivery and tone, a stop/start rhythm and changes of pace. However that said, this track has an almost rock and roll core and is more melodic than TAAS have ever been, so more accessible.

"Of Gold" is an album that manages to be easy to listen to courtesy of a load of catchy melodies and great riffs while giving you a bit of a challenge through nicely jagged moments and some awkward rhythms, it's the real rock out moments that make this album though; 'Up, Up, Up' is a cracking tune and holds more than a couple of them; a fast pace and a build up towards the end when the guitars let loose gets you up moving, and the closer, 'Cannibals' mixes all these things together to end the album on a high note. It's a smart record in that respect, having the best of those two worlds should increase their marketability, but above all, it's just a solid record full of great tunes you want to come back to.
