Going Underground

The latest in the endless line of "next big things" come The Subways, ("the definitive new band of the year" - Zane Lowe) arriving hot on the heals of the last big thing who were dissected and picked over for about 15 mins before disappearing down the memory hole.

"Oh yeah" is a burst of hyper indie energy with garage rock undertones and a nice male/female call and response vocal duel. Produced by Ian Broudie, who brings his pop sensibilities to proceedings by keeping it short and sweet, it's a cut above a lot of the dross around at the moment and illustrates a competent song writing talent coupled with an ability to execute that talent with confidence.

The flip side "Take me away" continues down the primal rock route. Whilst lacking the pop immediacy of "Oh yeah" and containing a markedly different vocal in the form of a monotone drawl it succeeds with its youthful swagger and raw vitality that has echoes of Iggy and the Stooges. A proper b-side.

A promising first single by a young band with potential, who if given enough time to mature rather than hyped to holy hell could eventually develop into an exciting proposition.
