Carpenter - Sea To Sky

Adeptly amalgamating post-punk and rock, Canadians Carpenter have a wonderfully raw and refreshing sound, that will excite fans of The Starting Line, Cartel, Say Anything and Taking Back Sunday.

The bubbly band's sophomore effort, 'Sea To Sky', is a strong follow-up to 2008's 'Law Of The Land'. The full-length has been carefully constructed and crafted, and boasts cool choruses and vivacious vocals, along with soaring melodies and hooks, which all complement each other perfectly.

With its honest and revealing words and alternation between 4/4 and 6/8 time, album opener 'Mean Things' is both melodic and memorable. The striking song sets the bar high and already you are left wondering how the band can possibly top the debut track.

However, listeners will quickly realise that Carpenter should not be underestimated, as the following nine tunes effortlessly exceed expectations. 'Common Law' and 'Joan' superbly showcase frontman Daniel Sioui's poignant and powerful pipes, whilst 'Long Hard Day' and 'One Horse Town' prove to be rough and ready rock 'n' roll anthems.

Focusing on issues close to their hearts - the band are against the corporate agricultural industry - the four-piece's DIY attitude and ethos, along with their passion and drive for direct, hard-hitting music, is evident throughout the 10-track release.

The rockers are reminiscent of a variety of artists including their personal musical influences and idols, Bruce Springsteen, Hot Water Music and Texas Is The Reason. Songs such as 'Northern Exposure' and 'Separate' are both prime examples of their similar style and sound.

'Sea To Sky' is an entertaining and enjoyable record that sees the quartet storm through a sublime set of songs, each as exciting, exhilarating and unpredictable as the last. With their sincere songwriting approach and authentic take on rock and roll, Carpenter are definitely a band worthy of your attention.
