Knights of Cynotia

Only months after forming, alternative rock quartet Cynotia release their debut opus "I Would Fly...". No longer does a band require a lucrative recording contract or the financial aid to realise their vision, but do the youthful British group have what it takes to compete in a fiercely competitive scene?

Leading track (and first single) '10 Years' sets the wheel in motion with Selina Clark's self-harmonised vocal lines layering effectively in the choruses. The album stumbles into a slightly more placid feel as 'Stand' and 'Excuses' are eased into, with the songs soon resorting to a heightened degree of dynamism. 'The Trend,' in particular, has a charming quirkiness to it, characterised by playful guitar harmonics and triplet drum fills. Bassist Liv Swann exercises a sense of melodic freedom and as the album reaches 'Rembrandt,' it is evident that the four string backbone of the band relishes the opportunity to explore beyond chordal roots.

Clark's voice possesses a gentle beauty to it, yet ultimately lacks the strength to hold its own amongst flaring guitar parts and pumping bass lines. Drummer Jon Black's swift drum fills add rhythmic energy to many of the tracks; the stickman thundering around his kit at breakneck speed. The four piece tie together reasonably well, yet there is always the sense that they are struggling to accommodate Clark's restrained vocals.

It is certainly clear to see what the Gloucestershire foursome are attempting to achieve, but unfortunately the DIY sound does very little to shine the youthful group in a positive light. The debut album is a milestone achievement for any rising band, but in the case of Cynotia, it marks a point from which they must begin significant development. Quite understandably, not all emerging bands have the backing of hefty financial support, but until they venture out into a professional studio, Cynotia are going to struggle to shake the 'bedroom' sound. Recording quality is not the only flawed aspect, with numerous areas for improvement amongst the band's performance. However, should you be seeking a young, ambitious band that are determined to make a name for themselves in forthcoming years, then note down the name of Cynotia.
