Black Iris - Black Iris

With their influences including noisy veterans Killswitch Engage and 36 Crazyfists, it is evident that Black Iris have learnt from the scene's finest. Whilst they haven't completely mastered the art of melodic metal just yet, the Surrey lads are well on their way to making a mark in the genre.

Indeed, their self-titled EP proves for easy listening... well as easy a listen that metal can offer. Opening with the aptly-titled 'It's Only Just Begun', the track is a soaring anthem that hints at a younger Iron Maiden.

Proving they are no one-hit wonders, the three follow-up tunes do not disappoint. Seconds short of eight minutes, the lengthy 'The Tangled Web We Weave' is an atmospheric slab of meaty metal offering rocketing vocals and grunts with robust riffage.

Featuring hella catchy choruses 'Better Luck Tomorrow' and 'Heart Still Beats' round the second half of the record off rather nicely, with the latter becoming one for the constant repeats collection.

The EP is an admirable debut effort from the Southerners, who most definitely deserve your time. Oozing potential, things are only going to get bigger and better for this band, so give 'em a listen and support 'em from the start.
