Mystery, Melancholy and Muppets.

Irish songwriter Don Scannell's debut album Three Silver Pieces has received mixed reviews across the board, but through the album's lead single Mystery, Scannell has successfully channelled the spirits of Simon and Garfunkel to create haunting vocal harmonies in a song where melancholy is ubiquitous.

The down tuned acoustic guitar blends its newfound deep sound with the rhythm bass to create what can only be described as a pretty sadness, accompanied by the occasional plush of piano to create strong feeling. Until the initial shock of awesomeness wanes away there really is nothing else to say, other than the song is pretty damn cool. Oh wait, didn't I mention the music video?

That's right, what makes Mystery an even more awesome endeavour is its artistically soft spoken music video. The relationship between two lithe marionettes operated by Ronnie La Drew amplifies the song's sombre nature. Anyone with a sharp eye and a strange interest in 80's cult movies will recognise La Drew as the man who worked alongside Jim Henson on the Bowie-tight-pants-crotch-fest Labyrinth. Mystery just got so much cooler.
