Fire away...
Three tracks isn't long to make an impression. Just like in those first few moments of meeting someone new, choosing what makes it onto your EP is as important as deciding whether it's appropriate to go in with a hug, handshake or slap in the face. It will form the lasting memory of association, whether a band's good or bad... whether the person you just met was a future friend or restraining order waiting to happen. Glaswegian quintet The Detours are an example of a band who have pitched it just right, with debut EP Ignite providing the perfect introduction to a group that show a great deal of promise.
Their three tracks of choice encompass an identity that demonstrates tenacious energy and confidence that could fuel a rallied rock n' roll army for weeks on end. Opener One Last Chance flies out at a tremendous pace, but avoids falling foul of seeming overly eager to grab attention. The result is a catchy pop-rock track rounded by melodic progressive chords and strong vocal performance. Title track Ignite steps the game up with some beautifully showcased guitar work, including a belting little solo which indicates real potential for live performance. To be fair, this was probably already in the bag on account of the past support slots with Asking Alexandria and Bury Tomorrow.
Free confirms what we had already realised. The Detours are a riff-wielding treat. Bursting with infectious rhythm and well timed changes of pace, this is a perfect way to end with the memory of an excellent first impression left fresh in the mind. With this initial test passed with flying colours, it's sure to be nothing but a straightforward route to success for this exciting Scottish band.
