They really should be happy...
Sexy But Not Happy sounds like it could be a musical tribute to Gary Barlow and his time during the X Factor audition process, but to be fair Museum Mouth are probably the sort of band that might balk at such a suggestion. They're a bit too cool for this talent show nonsense, y'know?
Instead, the record is a thirteen track shimmy through the glittering arcades of new-wave indie with a cool lo-fi breeze of nonchalance skimming the fresh new face of this Northern trio. Those that are familiar with Museum Mouth may notice a bit of creative rejiggery in this latest offering; as an absence of female vocals and sense of youthfulness has made way for the rumbling touches of a deeper, richer sound and a more striking sense of identity. The overtly lo-fi vibe of the record dominates this character, but each track shows it's implementation across a number of incarnations keeping things fresh and interesting.
Blood Mountain proves to be a stand out track, with a wonderfully infectious signature riff that's layered over thick muted crashes of drums and bass. Speaking of bass, Certain Doom indulges it's awesomely sexy power to the max with a sludgy dark atmosphere and retro garage rock feel. We likes it. For the more energetic of souls, Bigger Problems and Goodbye, Evan are going to be the hyper-punk tinged dance-friendly tracks to be whipping out along with a few cans on a weekend.
The one you need to be listening to above all others however, is the title track. It may only be a couple of minutes long, but Sexy But Not Happy is a perfectly formed hit of indie groove and a colourwash of nostalgia to make your insides feel all nice. You must be sold now? If you're a fan of No Age, Lemuria and Wavves you really need to be checking these lot out.
