Capelle - Crooked Deluxe
The story of Capelle began when Australian native Nic Capelle arrived in the capital and entered a track called Looking in a Mirror in the London O2 Undiscovered competition. Although he was unsuccessful in winning the competition, Nic made it to the final selection, which gave him the opportunity to gain recognition for his material. The follow up to 2008's Money Now, Money How, Money When is about to be released upon the world and goes by the name Crooked Deluxe .
The raw yet melodic rock sound that is incorporated within this release is created through Nic Capelle's specific use of the musicians he has worked alongside. For each album and song he selects musicians he believes can bring the song to its fullest and best quality through their particular skills. When all these musicians and their sounds come together, the result is a thirteen track album full of rough edged rock. Having said that, buried beneath the rawness is some strong talent. The songs demonstrate the unique vocal capabilities of the Aussie frontman and his song writing abilities. He has the know-how of judging just what each song requires in terms of vocals and music which suits the written words - from the upbeat majority to slower All My Life.
The only pin point that does shake things up a little are the electronic touches. There are times these seem too overpowering and drive the written, vocal and musical elements back, distracting from the focus points a little too much. When used in moderation they can be appreciated. With the same budget on this record as his previous album, zero, he has done wonderfully well and has been able to experiment with sounds and techniques, such as recording drum elements in a stairwell of an industrial estate to achieve a specific effect.
To coincide with the release of Crooked Deluxe, a documentary chronicling the bands journey from LA to New York in a RV will be screened at international film festivals.
