The Winter Olympics Debut profit and loss
Some bands like to take their time to make an album but I don't think there's many who'd take 10 whole years. But The Winter Olympics aren't really a band that does things the normal way. 10 years with several different bass players in makeshift recording studios in bedrooms and beneath pubs and Profit and Loss is finally ready, something which I'm sure at times people thought would never happen.
During the years they spent creating their debut Profit and Loss it seems The Winter Olympics have also managed to create their own genre, combining elements of dance, punk, indie and rock and roll. I know what you're thinking; that sounds like a mess but trust me surprisingly it somehow works. Ever track is bold and in your face, the way a good album ought to be. Opener Regional Showcase has Andrew Wagstaf singing about all the trials and tribulations of the lengthy recording process combined with fist pumping drum beats and irresistibly sing-along-able wooaaahs. Previously released single I prefer the early stuff has an addictive beat and has a chorus that instantly sticks in your head. Attention all departments is the classic carefree party song and is guaranteed to get you dancing along... even if it is around your bedroom in your pyjamas. Latest singleFags and girls is charmingly honest and tells the relatable tale of trying to get over someone when there's still a spark.
It's nice to see a band who have truly taken the DIY approach actually successfully pull it off. It's big, it's ambitious, it's full of huge choruses and exudes energy Profit and Loss is an album you'll find yourself happily listening to over and over again... which considering it could be another 10 years until we get the next one is can only be a good thing.
