Attention Grabbing

Forget throwing a mere fistful of riffs at you, The Pet Goats have taken a double decker bus, filled it full of chords and riffs to pound you into oblivion and then proceeded to drive it straight into you, although perhaps not at full speed. EP opener, Military Mind Control is a perfect example of this. Rammed full of scuzz fuelled riffs that pulsate menacingly and yet seductively into your consciousness, this is a track that keeps the foot firmly off the accelerator, opting instead for a slow, steady bleed through your ears approach as the Vienna based band who originally hail from New York (not too sure how that happens) literally mess with your mind, unleashing a fuzzy, raw sound pounding with beats all wrapped nicely with a psychedelic bow to confuse and intrigue. The bizarrely named ZBIGNIEW Knows does little to clear things up as the band continue in the same vein, ushering you further down the rabbit hole and into their world before cutting the song short mind riff. Title track Cartoons amazingly harbours a catchy hook amidst the chugging riffs and gruffly inviting vocals before the steady, driving beat of Tales Of Old Street Fighters demands your attention.

Managing to be simultaneously laid back and in your face attention demanding, The Pet Goats latest EP, Cartoons excites and intrigues in equal measure and whilst it may not hold the appeal for the masses, this is an EP that is bound to be a firm favourite for old and new fans alike.
