Dayseeker - What It Means To Be Defeated
Californian based quintet Dayseeker released their debut album recently and here is what will be in store for you when you pick it up.
The album kicks off with the dark atmosphere of Black Earth that grows through the pounding of drums, as if soaring over landscapes, including some rugged vocal screams with a steadier vocal also present. These two toned vocals work well, the screams giving a great urgency and the softer vocal giving a more relaxed feel throughout the album. The track goes out with pounding and screaming to make way for Collision. Survive and then the album's title track, where the guitar work adds a little extra in terms of melodies.
The next two tracks, Incinerate and Hollow Shell, sit beside each other very well. In the first, the screams become more of a chant at times while the music remains quite heavy. The echo of vocal screams seems a little out of place, but as it fades out the softer vocal shines through for a while before reverting back to the heavier side. This makes for one of the more interesting tunes. The latter opens with much more easy-going music and vocals with harmonies becoming quite strong. The guitars are what make Dead Man stand out at first then add some beautiful vocals singing and harmonising. Although the tempo speeds up it remains fairly slow moving and ballad like. This is a three minute insight into another side of Dayseeker before Resurrect screams into attention, and thumps its way into your mind and The Home We Built with its gentle vocal make for some more memorable moments.
Sleep In The Sea opens unlike any of the other tracks. The slow paced music and smooth vocals are quickly replaced with some much tougher sounds and the only other time we hear the softer side is midway through when the gruff vocals echo in the background. Concluding the album is The Quiet Disconnect. Although the piano opens the tune gently, you are quickly catapulted into a scream and a further five minute explosive of an ending.
There is so much budding talent behind these tunes and so many tracks on this album that have the potential to become singles; Dayseeker has done a great job with their debut.
