Prophets Of War

Generation Kill are the self proclaimed next step in the evolution of Thrash Metal. They don't just carve out Thrash Metal tracks as you might expect, instead they use it as a powerful backdrop for several different influences mashed together to impale your brain. Some of the tracks on We're All Gonna Die are just undeniably heavy. The breakdown into thrash fuelled chaos on the initially slow starting Prophets Of War for example will make you want to run around like a maniac chanting random phrases. Isn't that what Thrash is all about after all?

A clear example in the shift though in styles comes with the far doomier and sludgy Death Comes Calling. The crossover in styles does show how much of a team effort the writing for this album must have been. It can be stated that each band member perhaps specialises in certain areas, and throughout each are allowed to showcase what they're all about. Just using Rob Dukes as an example; it is clear that the for the Exodus front man, tracks like Friendly Fire and title track We're All Gonna Die were his babies.

Of course it's not always brilliant clashing styles and influences. Here a lot of the way it does work with some of the slower, heavier tracks providing a bit of a breather for the mad thrash moments. This feels key, because otherwise we'd have another very generic thrash metal album.

However some of the slower parts on the album, whilst giving listener's that breather, are definitely the weaker moments. If the band are able to hone in and perfect these tracks for future releases they'll easily get some major crowd singing at shows alongside the fist pumping and circle pits. Tracks like Carny Love are just your classic album filler. On record they're utilised for a purpose but it is hard to imagine they'd go down that well live.

On the whole then this is more than a solid release, it's pretty fucking good! Yes some elements are a bit of a miss, but if you want to just rock your tits off to a solid metal album then it's all good. Exodus, Marauder, Mutliation and Pro-Pain combine to create their own brand of chaos.
