Sounding great after all these years
With an impressive career spanning nearly a decade so far, the Super Furry Animals are standing taller than ever. After six studio albums, countless headline tours and the obtaining of thousands of fans, SFA find themselves in the here and now celebrating all they’ve accomplished, and don’t look like they’re stopping any time soon! Having dazzled fans and critics alike at Reading and Leeds they now return to the studio to record their seventh full length album, but not before they unleash their latest triumph upon the world. I give you ‘Songbook – The Singles Volume One.’
This album is a must for all SFA fans, and an even bigger must for those who are only just beginning to catch on. Filled with every single released from every album, this is the definitive chronicle of the band’s rise to fame and its growth throught the ages. Newer classics such as ‘Do Or Die’ and 'Juxtaposed By You’ ring true. However we are also taken on a virtual journey back in time to the mid 90s when the SFA were new to the scene. This includes an extra special treat of the track ‘Blerwytirhwng?’ taken of their debut EP entitled ‘LLanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyndrobwllantysilio-gogogochynygofod’ (oh I just had to write it!) which is, for those less familiar to it, is a delicately vocalic and musically gifted track which shows that even at an early stage, the guys were destined for great things. There are more delights in the original studio versions of ‘The Man Don’t Give A Fuck’, a realistic yet pretty upbeat glance at the world today, and ‘Ice Hockey Hair’ which has never previously been featured on an album.
This album is a brilliant testimony to the SFA’s contribution to their own music and to the music scene altogether. From ‘Northern Lights’ to ‘Hometown Unicorn’ every song will hit home with someone, somewhere and whether you already love this band or not, it doesn’t take a genius to realise this album will be as big a hit as its creators.
