Banquets - Spit At The Sun
Banquets first made an impact on the music scene with their debut full-length album Top Button, Bottom Shelf back in 2011 and followed this up two years later with their self-titled release. This October however marks the final release from the Jersey City band’s titled Spit At The Sun.
When it comes to creating this album Banquets have squeezed out even more melodic Pop Punk into these ten tunes kicking off with Forecaster and concluding with I've Got a Scheme. Each track has a very similar basis consisting of strong guitars, a bounce that keeps your toes tapping along and some strong vocal contributions. There is some very talented sharp guitar playing on Oblivion and Backwash particularly, strong melodies on To Reminisce and catchy lyrics within Hell, Hello. Lucky Lighter is the only real differing tune due to its smoother and more empowered ambiance.
Although Banquets certainly have some talent when it comes to creating melodic Pop Punk, considering this is the final time they will be releasing new material due to their departure from the music industry, it is a shame that there isn’t more elements that stand out or add to the flow of things. There is nothing unique, nothing that will take your breath away on the first listen or leave a lasting impression towards the end of the release.
Spit At The Sun is an energetic Pop Punk release and it will be a shame to see the talented Banquets dissolve from the music industry before their talent has really had time to grow.
