English band take the American route
Dear god, this single sounds just like the Goo Goo Dolls, from the vocals to the guitars. In fact, let me rephrase that slightly, 'Crash and Burn' sounds like 'Slide'. Listening to this, you'd never guess that the Ga Gas are English - the vocals are so Americanised it's really quite shocking. However, at least there's a strong chorus with some flesh to it.
'Sex', the b-side, is an acoustic version - vastly different from the original with its own charms. It sounds more emo with just the acoustic guitars, yet more bluesy at the same time. It also has a quirky edge to it, in no small part due to the fact that the vocals are less Americanised, and damn they sound vulnerable (without seeming pathetic).
As the first chords of 'Crash and Burn' struck, I prepared myself for the worst only to find there was no need. Not the most inspired of a-side choices, but it's a good start.
