A Cd in tribute to the amazing Sublime

'A Tribute To Sublime' is a collaboration of some of today's most experienced artists covering a range of hits by the legendary Sublime. It's almost ten years since songwriter Brad Nowell died from a fatal heroin overdose in a hotel room. The band was renowned for their experimentation in ska, punk, reggae and psychedelic dub. 18 bands have recorded tracks for this tribute CD including such acts as No Doubt, Pennywise and Jack Johnson.

So this compilation of tributes begins with a rather soothing track by Jack Johnson called 'Badfish/Boss DJ' which is a great tune that complements any lazy afternoon in the sun. Fishbone cover the Sublime all time cult classic 'Date Rape' where the band exaggerate all those traits that the classic is renowned for. It's speed is intense as ever and the bass throbbing on every note. The vocalist really complements the song well and simply adds to the comedy of the lyrics. Bargain Music cut the chase with 'Get Out' before punk band Avail play a more rocking version of 'Santeria', which is done without one flaw. No Doubt also play a live version of 'D.J's' which for a No Doubt song is pretty well played and could be the only track on the album that is better than the original. 'Waiting For My Ruca' is a song covered by multiple R n'B and rap artists who create a rather interesting annotation of the original, which includes a nice bass line and some wicked percussion.

This CD is certainly worth every penny if you are a Sublime fan and interested in hearing bands playing alternative versions to the originals. If you're simply buying the CD for the odd track of one of your favourite bands then be prepared to be disappointed. For a meaty 60 minutes of covers ranging from so many different genres, it is certainly worth the buy.
