Solid but nothing new
God Forbid are becoming pretty big in the modern metal scene, all over magazines such as Metal Hammer and touring with bands such as Chimaira and Machine Head they have gained a fair amount of new fans through this and their previous album 'Gone Forever' received many positive reviews throughout the rock media and now the band are back with an all new album. A concept album, the band have evolved in the most positive way possible with a big step forward. Will they gain even more success with this latest offering?
Opening with 'The End Of The World', which may I add, contains one of the greatest intros to an album known to man, it starts off with a calming, melodic intro which then crashes into a heavy slice of metal with great riffs which don't sound dissimilar to Chimaira. 'The Chains Of Humanity' starts off with some guitar twiddling that is reminiscent of Death, the main bulk of the song is very good, Byron shows off his vocal talents in the chorus and pre-chorus also. Tracks on this album such as 'Into The Wasteland', 'The Lonely Dead' and 'Divinity' are simply no bullshit, downright slices of brutal, modern metal at its very best. In fact, all the tracks are like this, this album is 100% metal, sounding like Pantera, Chimaira with hints of old-school Metallica. A good album with a good concept, while this album may offer up some strong modern metal tracks, this band do not particularly stand out from stronger new bands like Shadows Fall and Chimaira whom God Forbid are frankly forgettable when compared to.
The band here are pretty awesome, guitarists Doc Coyle and Dallas Coyle (who are brothers) are great, Doc pulling of some great solos and Dallas offering some heavy backing riffs. Bassist, John Outcalt is nothing special but does the job; the same could be said for Drummer, Corey Pierce.
Overall this is a pretty solid album from God Forbid, a huge step up from the previous albums to say the least, they may be a good band, but the only problem is that there are loads of other bands that sound like them and loads of other bands that THEY sound like. A solid album but nowhere near as good as other modern metal acts such as Chimaira or Machine Head, solid, but nothing new here.
