We Are Scientists
Whether these guys are actual scientists is yet to be proven but if there was ever such a thing as a music scientist, then they fit the bill. The trio's second single, 'The Great Escape', demonstrates how they experiment musically, creating a fusion which at times confuses both the body and mind. Should you rock to the pumping beat or do you actually dance to this track which contains feet thumping guitar rifts? Wherever the song takes you though, you know that you are discovering the band of the future. This is a band that can pull all the right heartstrings lyrically whilst simultaneously having you rocking across the dance floor.
Although possessing enough elements of pop to hopefully gain the attention of the mass public at last, 'The Great Escape' still manages to retain a sufficient quota of indie rock to please old and new fans alike. The verses are belted out with a sense of urgency, suggesting an escape situation taking place and this atmosphere is continued with strong, pulsating guitar rifts that add to the brilliance of this single. With a somewhat unconventional slower chorus, 'The Great Escape' is able to prove what a major music force We Are Scientists have the potential to be. Whether you believe that they really are scientists is a question of personal choice and gullibility. For now though just shout, "Eureka!" and revel at discovering a brilliant single. However, a little note for those few who believed the title suggested a single which paid homage to a certain Steve McQueen film - you are both greatly mistaken and quite frankly a little scary!
