Crashing the dancehall with style.
Now the first thing I noticed about the Dancehall Crashers is not only do they have two vocalists, but that said purveyors oral sounds, are female - Yep, nothing gets past me folks! But what I find the most satisfying about the aforementioned fact is that they don't put on a false front like a certain ska8er g1rl, but have a true understanding and blatant love of what they do, which is of course play great jiggering-sugar-coated Ska.
This is of course a DVD - for all out older readers, these are like a morphing of a CD (contemporary LP) and a video cassette - so just what do we get for our hard earned cash? You get a well-produced live show filmed at the famous House of Blues in Los Angeles comprising of 23 happy-rockin' slices of ska. To be completely honest the Special Features are a little disappointing in so much as you get Exrta Footage which has two slightly overlapping screens of crowd shots and interviews with excited kids, which can be confusing and a little off putting on the eye! An interview, or even a few quick words with the band would've been better. There's a Photo Gallery from the gig, Web Links, and trailers to other films from Kung Fu - hardly nipple hardening, I think you'll agree...
The Dancehall Crashers are a breath of fresh air in the music industry. It's a nice blend of upbeat rock, which you can't help but smile along to. The dual vocals of Elyse Rogers and Karina Denike are truly magnificent and go together so naturally like suger & spice, Salt & Pepper, and Ant & Dec. Songs like opener, 'Lost Again', 'Next To You' new song 'Don't Call' and 'Triple Track' are great jerking ska numbers, whilst 'Queen For A Day', 'Truly Comfortable' and 'Sticky' are a little more pop/punk - 'Good For Nothing' is just beautiful.
So overall those guys at Kung Fu Records have put together another quite brilliant DVD of a band that captures everything that is truly great about rock. It's great happy jumpy punk/ska - And even though the other band members - guitarist Jason Hammon, Bassist Mikey Weiss and drummer Gavin Hammon - remain still, the two singers jump around just enough to hold the interest of the crowd and show that two-fifths of the band possesses charisma...
