Coheed and Cambria - The Suffering
Coheed and Cambria are renowned for their critic defying concept albums based in a fantasy world born from the imagination of lead singer Claudio Sanchez. They can be characterised by epic Pink Floyd-esque guitar solos and ten minute long masterpieces, but how do they fair with a radio friendly pop song? Like everything else they do, they do it with style and vigour. The Suffering is the first single to be released from their exhaustively titled third album 'Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness'. Don't let the title put you off however, this isn't just crazy comic fuelled geek-rock, this is musical genius with a narrative mission.
Unusually the radio edit of this single is longer than the album version, however this helps to give the song more of an identity in its own right, rather than just being a part of the album as a whole. The song is laden with hooks right from the first dual guitar riff in the intro, all the way to the end as the infectious chorus builds and climaxes like a mini aural orgasm.
As a single The Suffering stands in its own right as a catchy and well written song, however in order to fully appreciate this band's genius you should check out their albums and if you're really obsessed their comic books!
