A more subdued but plaintive affair
Given the fact that 'I Want You to Stay' is the sixth single to be released from 'A Certain Trigger', it would be quite easy to slap a label of sell-out on Maximo Park. Either them, or their record label, seem to be squeezing as much as possible out of the album despite there being no need - sell out tours indicate a still growing popularity. It's a shame because they're a superb band.
Of all the things that constitute Maximo Park, Paul Smith's lyrics are the best part; painfully honest and self-aware, they tell the tale of thousands of relationships. Some people accuse them of not having much depth, but listen to them properly and you'll see that their new wave indie is full of surprises here and there. It was always one of the better songs, and its tight-coiled melody and beat draw you in.
Whether they should've released an entirely new song remains to be seen, but 'I Want You to Stay' is still a great song.
