Demeter – Addict
Addict is the latest single from asymmetrical haircut duo Demeter; but before you dismiss them as more style over substance electro-pop please read on.
Reading the biography of vocalist Anna Mercedes (let us hope this isn't her real name) certainly had me intrigued. It's fascinating, she appears to have led an extraordinary life despite the fact that her musical career is only just beginning.
From learning the details of her childhood, it would become all too easy to mistake the blonde bombshell as a bastard child of the grunge scene; her teen years spent picking up after the likes of Soundgarden at her parent's recording studio in Seattle.
There is a hint of grunge influence within 'Addict', but it sounds more like 90s bands such as Smashing Pumpkins and early Garbage. In fact 'Addict' reminds me a little of 'Stupid Girl'. Whilst there is nothing particularly ground breaking or pioneering within Demeter's sound, it is still a great sultry rock track, like a slightly heavier sounding PJ Harvey.
The smouldering vocals and guitar tracks continue with B-sides Venus and Under Your Spell, the latter being a beautiful harmonic piece of piano-accompanied melancholy.
