Extroverts Show Their Subtle Side
The Scissor Sisters have had huge success so far with their good time anthems. ‘Mary’, the third single to be taken from their debut, self-titled, chart-climbing album, is a definite break from the norm.
The catchy hooks and tunes from previous releases are miraculously transformed into a heart-felt lilting melody. The jazzy vocals are now smooth and eloquent with a true sincerity which almost seems unexpected from such an extrovert band. Nevertheless they produce a wonderful ballad which refreshes your ideas about the band and really broaden your expectations of what they can accomplish.
The B-sides are an interesting techno, dance floor version of the song which is remixed brilliantly to give a superb trance styled take, though in the process the emotional core of the song becomes waylaid by electronic beats. ‘Take Me Out’, the Franz Ferdinand classic, is reasserted into a Jamie Cullum-esq, piano and acoustic guitar fusion. It really gives the song a new twist of life in a way you will never hear it done. It was a risky choice but this cover is definitely worth a mention!
