"How Do You Do?" must count as one of the strangest collaborations in living memory. Fantastically named former Test Icicle Devonte Hynes has hooked up with Michigan moog manglers and terminal under-achievers Whirlwind Heat to create a rather charming slice of noisy slacker rock that sounds like an off-cut from Pavement's "Slanted & Enchanted". Coo-ed backing vocals wrestle for the listener's attention with crunchy, grungey guitars and some frankly hyper kinetic drumming. While this is all very nice (who doesn't like early Pavement / Dinosaur Jr. after all?) it's questionable whether the world really needs another band echoing the sweet sounds of 1992/93.
Flip-side 'In My Dreams' isn't quite as effective – the band adopting a lighter psychedelic approach, a nagging guitar riff trundling round in circles before running out of steam as the finishing line approaches. Casting aside this minor gripe if the band can produce more tracks like the former and less like the latter there may be enough mileage in this partnership for a reasonably fine album.
