Circuits – Pistols At Dawn

As a reviewer, you constantly get press releases, and read bands' bios, that say things like, "not just another *insert genre here* band", "defiantly standing out from the rest of the *insert genre here* crowd", or, in this case, not just "indie-pop wannabees". And of course, you often find that the band are just another *insert genre here* band, or that they do blend disappointingly into the crowd.

Pleasingly, this is not entirely the case with London based Circuits and their EP Pistols at Dawn. Whilst their sound does fit in with the Razorlight and Co. indie-pop scene, it blends this with a 70s new wave sound and, indeed, the band cite the likes of The Police and Elvis Costello as their influences. The result is a sound that is instantly more stand-out than the rest of the indie-rock pool. Eponymous track 'Pistols At Dawn', and more specifically its chorus, is the best part of this EP, but the live recording of 'Before It's Over' also holds together well.

Circuits aren't doing anything incredibly different or revolutionary, but the very fact that they are doing something slightly different is worthy of merit. If you're obsessed with the current NME-style indie-pop explosion, just give 'Pistols At Dawn' a spin in your CD player and see that it is possible to play a popular sound and be a little bit different.
